Is French terry the same as fleece?

Is French terry the same as fleece?

No. French terry and fleece are different knits — check the reverse side. French terry has a smooth knit face and visible loops on the reverse; that looped construction is what makes it breathable and mid-weight. Sweatshirt fleece has a brushed, raised reverse that feels fuzzy. At The Fabric Lot they are separate collections: French terry at 300 GSM ($16.80 per yard) and 450 GSM ($21.00 per yard), and cotton fleece at 350 GSM from $15.23 per yard, plus a heavy 488 GSM fleece with matching rib. If your pattern calls for one, do not substitute the other without checking the weight and construction — they drape and wear differently. Not sure? A $7.20 swatch settles it before you buy yardage.
